1714. Drawing the myth.
A journey through the iconography of Catalan nationalism.
Travelling exhibition in the Public Libraries of Catalonia, as part of the Tercentenari 1714-2014programme.
The eleventh of September 1714 is a significant date in the history of the Catalans. Over the last three hundred years, a symbolic iconography has been built up around this date - mainly centred on the figure of Rafael Casanova - which has helped to engrave the myth of the siege of Barcelona in the collective imagination. But, hidden among the pages of the popular press and the shelves of libraries, there are many other graphic approaches to that historical event.
Until the advent of photography, drawing has been a perfect tool for the dissemination of ideas, whether in prints, posters, magazines or books. Vindicative drawings, historical illustrations, satirical cartoons, cartoons with a pedagogical purpose...; anonymous authors and important artists, all have contributed with their talent to build and disseminate the iconography of that historical moment and all its symbolic load.
This exhibition aims to show how the myth has been drawn, but at the same time it vindicates the strength of the drawn image, the talent of our artists and the graphic treasures that can be rediscovered on the shelves of our libraries and archives.
